Early Period Life

Early Period Life Pictures

Early Period Life class area is located at the end of Queen’s Highway on the right side of the road.  EPL offers a wide variety of classes focused on Western Europe pre-1066.  In addition to the Rusty Anvil Smithy, Kildonnen Longhall and covered general class shelter, there will be a cooking area with braziers and bread oven, a fire arts area with plenty of space for metal casting and much more.

Last year, the woodworking area was added to the class schedule and continues this year.  These hands on classes cover a wide variety of joinery techniques used to construct buildings in the Norse era.  The woodworking area will be teaching daily from 9am to 5pm throughout the war.  Come anytime and stay as long as you like to learn or just come to watch the wood chips fly.

Please come on Thursday at 9am to see how a period structure all comes together.  The framework pieces will be assembled and raised.

We’re not stopping there, the newly rebuilt bread oven is ready to go and a new clay and pottery area is gearing up for classes.

There will be an open demonstration day on Wednesday.  Skilled artisans will be available from 11am to 4pm to share their knowledge, expertise and answer questions.  Visitors are welcome to tour Kildonnen Longhall and the class area as well as the Bastermark camping space past the longhall.  Please note that the tents are not part of the EPL Class Area so although all are welcome to enjoy the encampment we would appreciate it if you would please ask before photographing or entering anyone’s tent.

The EPL cannot offer such a great class schedule without help from wonderful volunteers like you.  If you have a class in mind or expertise on a subject related to pre-1066 not only for Norse but Norman, Roman, Rus, Germanic, Irish, or any of their historical neighbors please contact the class coordinator to be added to the schedule.  If there’s something you think is missing, please let us know.  We’re always looking for great new ideas.

Thank you.
