Siege Weapons

Tuesday, 08 June 2010 00:00 | PDF | Print | E-mail

PLEASE NOTE: The information below was accurate for Gulf Wars XIX (2010) and is listed here for your reference only with the understanding it may change at any time.  This will be updated for Gulf Wars XX (2011) as soon as the information is available.

Siege Engines shall follow the SCA Siege Engine rules as of 7/2003.

Siege Engines are classified as Large Engines (Type A) that will have a foot print of 18 square feet, fire a Large Siege Projectile ( 1 LB Rock ) a minimum of 40 yards and be manned by a crew of 3. Large Siege Ammo can penetrate shields, gates, pavises, etc. according to the battle scenarios and conditions. All large ammo will be taped in yellow tape. The Siege Marshals of the three Kingdoms must inspect any and all so-called "novelty" ammunition before being allowed in play. Gunpowder recreations ( or cannon of any form ) are not allowed.

Small Engines ( Type B ) must have a footprint of at least 12 square feet, and fire a small siege projectile a minimum of forty yards and must be manned by a crew of 2. Both the shaft and combat head of 48" ballista Javelins must be completely covered with yellow tape, and 4-tennis ball ammunition shall be covered in yellow tape. These munitions may kill through shields but will not damage structures. Small arms munitions may be fired from siege engines but will only be counted as combat archery for damage purposes, and may not be marked with yellow tape.

All engines (except man-powered engines) must have a mechanical cocking device, such as a winch or windlass.

Man-powered engines will be considered small (Type B) engines and must meet the minimum and maximum firing requirements. Man-powered engines shall not be required to have a mechanical release or cocking device. These engines must use Type B ammo. One pound rocks are not allowed on these engines.

For the purposes of this war, only Large Siege Projectiles (1 LB Rocks) can destroy Siege Engines, Siege Towers, Ramps, etc. These are considered destroyed by one (1) hit from a Large Siege Projectile.

For the purpose of this war, Gates are destroyed by Large Siege Projectiles on three (3) hits, and by a battering ram on six (6) hits. Castle Towers are destroyed by Large Siege Projectiles on three (3) hits.

No gleaning of spent ammunition is allowed by Siege Engine crews.

No Engine may fire at any fighter on the field who is closer than 30 feet. Maximum range of any Siege Engine is 80 yards.

All siege equipment (engines, towers, ramps ...) and ammo must have the owners name and home group or kingdom written on it. If we find ammo without this information, the owner of the engine will be sent to Marshal's court. Please pick up your toys when playtime is over. Siege engines may be stored at Siege Engine Inspection Point until Sunday morning. All ammo must be cleared off the field after each battle. If the GW staff has to clean up your ammo or your engine, the owner (individual or group) of the engine will not be allowed to bring engines to the war the following year.

Towers/Ramps

Each assault ramp must have four unarmed fighters, two to either side of the ramp, to act as spotters. These spotters may not be attacked until their ramp is empty and they have picked up weapons. Persons inside Siege Towers and the like are immune to attack other than standard archery while inside the Tower. If a Tower is destroyed, all persons inside are considered killed. Similarly, if a tower is breached or boarded, said immunity ceases and normal combat may begin. Persons on the ramp may not engage, or be engaged, with anyone on or off the ramp. They are considered immune from all engagements. This includes archers. ALL Siege Engines will be locked and non-functioning in some manner while not in use. Further, ALL ammunition shall be locked down or secured in some manner while not in use. There is no exception to this rule, which is designed to keep small children from playing on them and possibly being seriously injured. The battlefield may not be marked for placement of siege engines. Nor can the distance be paced off. All Siege Engines will be placed into position for the first time just before the battles begin.

A Siege Engines Point will be set up behind the Castle. This will be the setup and inspection point for all Siege Engines. Siege Engines will not be allowed to be setup or stored anywhere else on the battlefield before the battles begin.
