History of Gulf Wars

Tuesday, 08 June 2010 00:00 | PDF | Print | E-mail
A War with No Enemies.

With thoughts to a “Southern War”, thoughts became words. I know not who spoke first.

Ryan von Gunterburg spoke for Meridies   Treve Moringstar and Carmenette Rosia Diez de Rodriquez represented Trimaris with their Kingdom Seneschal, who is now Gleann Abhann Kingdom Seneschal Master Erik of Telemark.  Charles Inman McMoore and Athena Morcan Derwyn Ddoo represented Ansteorra.   They were, or became, the Kings and Queens of their Kingdoms.

On September 14, 1991 Baron and Baroness of the Stargate, Bran de Tintreak and Elisena de Bayonne welcomed all to Stargate Baronial.  In court that evening a Lord Blackwolf of Trimaris (who was a student in Ansteorra) was called.  His action was to throw a gauntlet at the feet of His Majesty Inman who accepted this challenge and called for a war to be fought between Trimaris and Ansteorra, on Meridian soil.

Beginning as a Local event hosted by Dragoun’s Weal, it continues to this day to be held at King’s Arrow Ranch, Lumberton, Mississippi.

Gulf Wars I (1992) and Gulf War II (1993) we both held in June.  Beginning in 1994 Gulf Wars was moved to March due to the foreboding temperatures experienced in the previous years. Temperatures have ranged from stifling hot to freezing.  It has rained, sometimes heavily, and it has been dry and dusty.

The length of the event increased over the years.  Currently Gulf Wars is from Sunday to Sunday. The Gulf Wars Saturday will always be on the third Saturday of March.

Gulf War XV was the first year to be hosted by Gleann Abhann, 19th Kingdom of the Knowne World.  It was once again A War with No Enemies.

One year there were Assault Elephants and Siege Armadillos, but we have no known photographic proof.

Below is the historian's letter for the Ambassador May 2007.

Memories

Gulf War is far too large to fully report in this space.  We danced, we marched, we charged, we made merry.  And that was just one day.   We learned, we taught, we volunteered, we kicked up our heels.   We consumed great quantities of many varied foods and beverages, perhaps at the 1st Annual Gleann Abhann Herb Guild sponsored Iron Chef Competition or the Social. We cheered for our friends, for the red and black.  We all hailed the Ram.  We received accolades both great and small, individually, as a Kingdom and one as a Knight.  All senses and emotions came into play.  Once again this war without enemies was a tie, although Trimaris was awarded most of the war points.  3569 were in attendance.  Weather as usual was varied, cold, pleasant, wet and dusty.

Thanks to those who reviewed the 1st Annual Gulf War History display and signed the “I was at GW One” book.    Gleann Abhann displayed a Moose crossing sign and nine albums of Gulf War photographs beginning with the Stargate, Ansteorra event where the gauntlet was thrown for what would become this war.  (GW XVI Autocrat Sir Godwin of Edington was there.)  The display was the dream of Mistress Annes of Ansteorra who provided the pavilion, Black Star articles mentioning Gulf War, several t-shirts and some early battle images.  Thanks to those who offered to contribute….don’t forget.  We also hope for the participation of Meridies and Trimaris next year.
